Final Report of Our TÜBİTAK 1001 Project No. 323S271 Approved Successfully

The final report of the project titled “Investigation of the Effects of Augmented Reality Training on Body Awareness, Trunk Appearance Perception and Exercise Adherence in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis”, carried out in collaboration between the Hasan Kalyoncu University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nursing and the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and supported under the TÜBİTAK 1001 program with project number 323S271, has been successfully approved.

The project, which received support in April 2024, was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Adnan Batuhan Coşkun of the Hasan Kalyoncu University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nursing, Child Health and Diseases Nursing unit. The project team included Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut, Asst. Prof. Dr. Zerrin Çiğdem, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kamile Merve Karatel and Asst. Prof. Dr. Erkin Oğuz Sarı as researchers, and Zeynep Akşamoğlu, Barış Can Çamsarı and Yağmur Kirmik as scholarship students.

Within the scope of this study, which was conducted with a randomized controlled experimental design, the effects of augmented reality-supported exercise training on body awareness, trunk appearance perception and exercise adherence in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis were examined. The findings showed that the augmented reality-based approach has the potential to increase certain areas of body awareness, reduce pain and improve trunk appearance perception. However, both approaches were found to offer short-term clinical benefits. The project yields important outcomes both for the integration of current health technologies into clinical practice and for strengthening the care and rehabilitation processes of individuals with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. In particular, the study has produced scientific data that will contribute to multidisciplinary health services in terms of increasing exercise adherence, supporting body perception and developing the individual’s awareness of their own body.

This project, carried out through the joint work of the nursing and physiotherapy disciplines, is an important scientific achievement not only in terms of academic output but also in the development of innovative and technology-supported care approaches. Being supported under a prestigious program such as TÜBİTAK 1001 further highlights the scientific quality and original value of the study. The successful approval of the final report is regarded as an important achievement reflecting Hasan Kalyoncu University’s research-focused vision, its interdisciplinary collaboration and its capacity for high-quality scientific production.
